May18-21, 2011 Convocations and Commencement Information

To celebrate George Mason University 2011 graduates, convocations will be held for academic schools and colleges on Wednesday, May 18 through Saturday, May 21, 2011. A schedule is below and details regarding graduation activities are available at http://events.gmu.edu/commence1.html. A map and directions to the Fairfax Campus are posted under the "Visit Us" tab on the Web site.

The 44th annual George Mason University commencement is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, 2011 and Mason will graduate 7,783 students at 10 a.m. in the Patriot Center. Admiral Thad W. Allen, USCG (Ret.)

will be the commencement speaker and will receive an honorary doctor in humane letters at the ceremony. The 2011 student speaker is Quincy Smith, who will receive a bachelor’s degree in Communication. Smith is a member of the university’s Forensics Team and competed for the speaker honor.

Parking and Traffic Update for May 18-21, 2011
Expect heavy traffic approaching and leaving campus in all directions. Free parking is available in all general lots and visitor area of Mason Pond Deck for convocations and commencement. Free parking will be available in the permit areas of Rappahannock Parking Deck. Free parking will also be available Saturday only in the permit levels of Sandy Creek Parking Deck. Attendants will be directing traffic to open and available parking.  Since convocations are scheduled at the Patriot Center, Concert Hall, and the RAC, parking on the southern end of campus, including lots A, C, J, K, L, and the Mason Pond Deck will be extremely busy. 511 Virginia, a toll-free phone service (owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation) can also be called for real-time traffic conditions.

It is strongly recommended to park on the north end of campus, including the Rappahannock River Parking Deck.
